INDO-GLOBAL SKILLS SUMMIT & EXPO 2017 on skills, startups and entrepreneurship will be held at Mumbai (July 17), Hyderabad (July 19), Chennai (July 22), Bangalore (July 24), Kolkata (July 26), and New Delhi (July 28).

It is well known that skill and knowledge are the fulcrums to a nation’s development and economic augmentation. In today’s global scenario, countries boasting of higher and better levels of skills are understood to adjust more efficiently to the opportunities and challenges in the work field and thus deliver results.

In India, the working age population is far in excess of that is dependent on them. A positive marker of the development of the economy of the country, this demographic situation can be a potential source of significant economic strength. But this is possible provided the skills of the population are enhanced and continuously upgraded.

Finding and keeping workers with the knowledge and skills to get the job done is critical in today’s workplace. Today’s knowledge-based economy is increasing the demands on workers skill levels. A skilled workforce is often the key to a company’s growth and stability, and it could be the determining factor in the success of the business.

Business and industry in India is facing shortage of skilled people. This shortage directly affects their productivity and growth. The primary challenge faced by business and industry in India is a shortage of 76% of technical and skilled manpower. As per estimates, only 4% of population of India is skilled compared to 68% in the UK, 75% in Germany, 58% in the USA, 80% in Japan and an enviable 96% in South Korea.

It has been estimated that 75% of fresh graduates from the education system of India are not readily employable. There is thus a huge opportunity and a challenge in building the required infrastructure for overcoming the shortage of skilled manpower.

The Indo-Global Skills Summit & Expo 2017 aims to take a deeper look at the present skill ecosystem, map it against the future trends, identify future jobs & skill requirements and propose a way to re-engineer the skill ecosystem. The Summit & Expo will examine collaboration between universities and industries for skills development; the generation, acquisition, and adoption of knowledge (innovation and technology transfer); and the promotion of entrepreneurship (start-ups and spin-offs).

Startups have become a clear focus not only from the Government "StartUp India" but with every major university now building an innovation lab and a startup cell including courses on Startups and Entrepreneurship. Startups have become important and interesting career options for students with a focus on "Job Creators vs Job Seekers". Frugal innovation is also in this mix for building the Startups and Entrepreneurship in India.

An important feature of the Summit & Expo 2017 would be presentation of Awards for excellence to honor and recognize individuals, institutions and organizations in private sector, public sector, NGOs, Government departments, etc who have demonstrated their commitment to the advancement of skills, startups and entrepreneurship.

Simultaneously, the Indo-Global Education Summit & Expo 2017 on collaborations with foreign universities and student recruitment will be held at the same venues in the above cities. Both of the events are expected to have mutually reinforcing and synergistic effect, as they are both targeted at students and youth.

Skill Development

India’s first National Skill Development Policy was formulated only in 2009 and in the last few years, the nation has witnessed much progress. The National Policy for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship 2015 supersedes the policy of 2009 with the objective of skilling at scale with speed, standard and sustainability. India aims to skill 500 million people by 2022. It is therefore time to gear up for the futuristic jobs that would be carved out of Automation, Manufacturing and Migration which are some of the disruptive drivers that are transforming and changing the job market dramatically. It is imperative that youth are equipped with life skills that are adaptable to the rapidly evolving 21st century society.


Academic Collaborations
Academic collaborations promote universal and equitable access to education, and develop in students the knowledge, confidence, and requisite skills to become lifelong learners and economic competitors in a dynamic global marketplace. Today, success is determined by access to knowledge. Education is no longer an option – it is a mandate for survival. An important mission of the Indus Foundation is to galvanize high-impact academic collaborations between educational entities in foreign countries on the one hand and those in India on the other. The Foundation acts as an internationally recognized support system for 21st Century education for bridging the education divide.
Re-engineering Skills Ecosystem
Skill Ecosystem in India is divergent and vast covering 20 central ministry schemes with varying rate of success. With the introduction of the new Ministry for Skills and entrepreneurship two and half years ago, an attempt has been made to converge the skill development initiatives by various ministries and align it to the industry demand. The skill ecosystem is in evolving stage and continuously embracing the best practices from the various domestic successful schemes and international best practices. It is necessary to examine the domestic & international best practices and deliberate on challenges and find the way forward for strengthening the Skill Ecosystem in India.
Future Skills: Technology, Jobs and Talent
Industry is the next phase in the digitization of the manufacturing sector, driven by four disruptions: the astonishing rise in data volumes, computational power, and connectivity, especially new low-power wide-area networks; the emergence of analytics and business intelligence capabilities; new forms of human-machine interaction such as touch interfaces and augmented-reality systems; and improvements in transferring digital instructions to the physical world, such as advanced robotics and 3-D printing. An economically disruptive technology has the potential to create massive economic impact. Advanced robotics, for example, has the potential to affect US $6.3 trillion in labor costs globally. Cloud technology has the potential to improve productivity across US $3 trillion in global enterprise IT spending, as well as enabling the creation of new online products and services for billions of consumers and millions of businesses alike. It is necessary to deliberate on the technological advancements in near future and its impact on labor market and skill sets required.
Skills for Migration: Mobility
In a globalized economy, a large pool of skilled workers is indispensable for attracting foreign direct investment. The Key initiatives of Make In India, Digital India, Smart Cities, Swachh Bharat and Clean Ganga will be achieved only if there is highly developed skill ecosystem in the country. Skill shortages can affect the productivity and growth of a business, delay projects, create ongoing vacancies, increase wage levels. The primary challenge faced by 76 per cent of Indian businesses is the shortage of technical or specific skills. India Inc takes an average of 96 days to recruit skilled workers. With manpower of 1.24 billion, it is ironic that India suffers from dearth of talent. Businesses would need to plug these skill gaps with people from outside the organization as best they can. But in the longer term, they need to invest in internal training programs to mould the people, as this would help them deliver on strategy, innovate and ultimately grow. It is necessary to deliberate on the ways to speed up the skill development transition through active industry engagement to achieve the aspirations of the society.
Academe and Industry Collaboration
India's education system has had a distinct bias against skills and government is now making efforts to integrate education with skill development. The current Indian education system does not lead to trained young people in employable skills who are open to immediate employment opportunities. With current and expected economic growth, this problem is expected to aggravate as more than 75% of the new job opportunities are expected to be skill-based. It is necessary to discuss the successful models of skills integration with education in the country and find possible way forward for large scale integration.

Collaboration between universities and industries is critical for skills development (education and training), the generation, acquisition, and adoption of knowledge (innovation and technology transfer), and the promotion of entrepreneurship (start-ups and spin-offs). The benefits of university-industry linkages are wide-reaching: they can help coordinate R&D agendas and avoid duplications, stimulate additional private R&D investment, and exploit synergies and complementarities of scientific and technological capabilities. University-industry collaboration can also expand the relevance of research carried out in public institutions, foster the commercialization of public R&D outcomes, and increase the mobility of labor between public and private sectors. The benefits of university-industry collaboration are evident in developing countries. For example, it is acknowledged that collaboration with universities substantially increases the propensity of firms to introduce new products and to patent.
Startups and Entrepreneurship
A startup is an entrepreneurial venture which is typically a newly emerged, fast-growing business that aims to meet a marketplace need by developing or offering an innovative product, process or service. A startup is usually a company such as a small business, a partnership or an organization designed to rapidly develop scalable business model. Often, startup companies deploy technologies, such as Internet, e-commerce, computers, telecommunications, or robotics. These companies are generally involved in the design and implementation of the innovative processes of the development, validation and research for target markets.

Traditionally, an entrepreneur has been defined as "a person who organizes and manages any enterprise, especially a business, usually with considerable initiative and risk". Rather than working as an employee, an entrepreneur runs a small business and assumes all the risk and reward of a given business venture, idea, or good or service offered for sale. The entrepreneur is commonly seen as a business leader and innovator of new ideas and business processes. Entrepreneurs tend to be good at perceiving new business opportunities and they often exhibit positive biases in their perception (i.e., a bias towards finding new possibilities and seeing unmet market needs) and a pro-risk-taking attitude that makes them more likely to exploit the opportunity.

Expo Program (Hall 2)
Indo-Global Skills Expo 2017 is a gathering in which companies, businesses, industries, NGOs, educational institutions, and skill developers set up table spaces and meet with their counterparts, students and career aspirants. Skills Expo presents an unparalleled opportunity to showcase skill development programs, startups and entrepreneurship. The Expo offers an opportunity not only to showcase and have one-on-one meetings but also to make brand statements to all the stake holders.

Skills Expo 2017 will take place in Hall 2. Table spaces of around 15 square feet with a table and chairs will be provided in the Expo. Companies, businesses, industries, NGOs, educational / training institutions, skill developers and others may take one or more table spaces for interaction with other participants. Participation in the Expo enhances their visibility.

Students and career aspirants will be registered at the entrance of Hall 2. Once registered, the candidates are free to approach each and every exhibitor present. Entry to the Expo is free for students and career aspirants.

Student Recruitment

Industrial training institutes, polytechnics, community colleges, technical colleges, vocational colleges, corporate trainers, skill providers, etc involved in skill development, startups and entrepreneurship will participate in the Expo. A large number of qualified Indian students are interested in career education and skill development in good institutions including industrial training institutes, polytechnics, community colleges, technical colleges, vocational colleges, corporate trainers, skill providers, etc. The Indus Foundation assists such institutions to recruit students and career aspirants. Its staff is in a unique position to offer current and relevant advice to students and career aspirants on the one hand and to the institutions on the other. Sponsors and exhibitors are invited to recruit students and career aspirants at the Summit & Expo.

  Activities during the Summit & Expo include one-on-meetings with students and career aspirants. Summit & Expo will provide an excellent opportunity to recruit substantial number of qualified students.

  • Delegate Fee

    The fee for participating in the Indo-Global Skills Summit & Expo as delegate is only INR 4,000 per person per city. The bank draft / cheque is payable to “The Indus Foundation, Hyderabad” at the earliest. The fee includes:

      Participation in all sessions of the Summit.
      Interaction with officials of foreign institutions and organizations.
      Participation certificates for each delegate.
      Advance publicity in India and abroad through the print and other media.

  • Awards

    There is no prescribed pro-forma for nominations. Self-nomination is permitted. All nominations must reach the Indus Foundation by e-mail at indus@indus.org immediately after registration. The Indus Foundation reserves the right to select awardees. Decisions of the experts of the Foundation will be final and binding. Award winners will be notified by e-mail after the selections are made.

    Processing Fee
      Processing fee payable for nomination for an award is only INR 10,000.
      For Awards for Skill Excellence to students, processing fee is only INR 4,000. .
      Nominations can be made for more than one award, but processing fee has to be paid for each award.
      Award winners are allowed to attend the entire Summit & Expo without payment of delegate fee.
      In case nominee is not selected for award, processing fee will be refunded.
  • Souvenir

    The Souvenir will contain valuable information related to skills, startups and entrepreneurship, along with the names and addresses of participants, sponsors, and exhibitors. The Souvenir will be distributed widely amongst participants, businesses, companies, NGOs, skill developers, educational institutions, invitees, governmental organizations, corporations, and others.
