Monroe College was founded in 1933 by Mildred King who recognized that students needed a strong educational foundation for a successful career in business. The demand for nurses throughout U.S.A. has reached epic proportions. Experts estimate that in the year 2010 the nursing shortage in the United States will reach 100,000. Considering the important t roles nurses play in the delivery of health care, the need is desperate and immediate. After student passes the NCLEX exam upon completion of the Monroe College Practical Nursing program, student can work under the supervision of an RN or physician in one of the many jobs available in nursing homes, doctors offices, clinics, hospitals, and private care.

1. What majors and degrees does Monroe offer?
A. Monroe College offers Associate degrees in Accounting, Business Administration, Computer Information Systems, Culinary Arts, Criminal Justice, Medical Administration, Medical Assisting, Hospitality and Tourism Management, and Computerized Office Technologies. Bachelor’s of Business Administration (B.B.A.) degree programs include Information Systems, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Hospitality Management, Health Services Administration and Accounting. Monroe also offers a Graduate MBA Degree in Business Management.
2. How long will it take to complete both an Associate and a Bachelor's Degree?
A. By attending Monroe College three semesters per year, qualified students can complete either an Associate or a Bachelor's degree in as little as sixteen months, or both degrees in under three years. Because of Monroe's generous transfer policies, students with transfer credit from another college can complete their degrees even quicker.
3. How small are the classes?
A. To ensure individualized instruction and quality education, all of Monroe's classes are kept small: rather than large lecture halls, classes meet in smaller, more intimate classrooms. Average class size is only 15 to 20 students.
4. Is student housing available at Monroe College?
A. Apartment-style student housing is available at Monroe College's New Rochelle campus. All accommodations are fully furnished and equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, and common living area. Housing is located within convenient walking distance of campus, shopping, laundromats, financial institutions and public transportation.
5. Is there a meal-plan at the college?
A. At each campus, students have access to the Monroe College cafeteria, as well as to local restaurants. In addition, Monroe College is implementing a pre-paid meal plan for use in the college's cafeterias.
6. Does Monroe have a day care facility?
A. For students with children, privately-operated daycare is available at St. James' Park Daycare, conveniently located near the Bronx campus. At NR we have “Evening Kids College” for SP/04 M-F 4:30 to 9:30 pm. Ages 6-15 - Free but must sign up with Crystal Singh at the Campus Dean’s Office X402

7. Can I take classes over the weekend?
A. Students can attend weekend classes at the Bronx campus on both Saturday and Sunday; at the New Rochelle campus on Saturdays. Weekend classes meet 8:45 to 11:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and 2:35 to 5:20 p.m.
8. Can I take day and evening classes?
A. While other schools tell you when you must attend class, Monroe asks when you are able to attend, and then tailors a schedule that works around your career and family commitments. Flex-Scheduling is education designed to enhance your life, not to interrupt it. Classes start as early as 7:30 a.m. and end as late as 10:45 p.m. You can choose from any combination of day, evening or weekend classes.
9. Does Monroe have tutors available?
A. Tutorial workshops and laboratories provide individual attention to those students who need extra help with their studies. Workshops and lab sessions are scheduled on a daily basis, while evening workshops vary. On Fridays and Saturdays, workshops are conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and daycare is provided for those students with children. In addition, an elite corps of Monroe students volunteer their time and talent to assist fellow students. Monroe also provides a Learning Resource Center at each campus, where students can utilize a comprehensive array of services and facilities. These include both professional and student tutors in all major subject areas, faculty assistance, computer programs, and audio/visual materials.
10. How do I pay for my education?
A. Monroe College is committed to providing an excellent education that is within the financial reach of every individual. Monroe ranks as one of the most affordable private colleges in New York State.
Students are eligible for both merit-based aid, awarded by Monroe College based on academic achievement, and need-based aid, which consists of grants and loans from the state and federal government offered on the basis of your family's ability to pay for school.
11. What about Career Placement once I graduate?
A. Monroe’s Career Resource Center offers students and alumni the vast resources to help prepare and advance their career. Students and alumni can take advantage of career counseling, resume writing workshops, lectures by industry professionals, job fairs and more. Monroe is dedicated to making sure students are prepared before they enter the job market and offer students a life time career resource.
12. Can I transfer my credits to another college, or from another school to Monroe?
A. Credits earned at Monroe College are fully transferable to other institutions; however, transfer policies and limits are set by individual schools. Check with the school to which you are considering transferring to determine how many credits it will accept. Monroe's generous transfer policy allows qualified students to transfer up to 30 credits from another institution into an Associate degree program, or up to 90 credits into a Bachelor's degree program.
13. Can I take a Distance Learning class and a regular class in one semester?

14. Does Monroe have athletic teams?
A. Monroe College has teams in Men's & Women's Basketball, Women's Volleyball, Men's Baseball, Women's Soft Ball and Men's Soccer. In addition to playing at schools throughout the New York area, Monroe teams have traveled to compete in Maryland and Georgia. A truly international team, the Mustangs are represented by players from all over the globe, including Ghana and the Caribbean Islands. Their success in athletics and in the classroom has enabled many Monroe players to go on to Division I and II NCAA programs at other schools, including Cornell University, Iowa State, Long Island University, and the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
15. Are there clubs and student activities at Monroe?
A. Monroe College is proud to sponsor a variety of clubs for students, like the International Students' Union. In addition, Monroe provides numerous extracurricular activities for students each semester. Recent events have included Paintball competition, music and dancing on a 2-hour cruise down the Hudson River, and hiking and picnicking at Bear Mountain Park.
16. Are there employment opportunities at the college while I go to school?
A. Qualified students may be eligible for co-op, internships, or Federal Work-Study. In addition, job placement assistance is available for both current students and alumni through the Career Services Office; students seeking employment should contact the Career Services Office and schedule an appointment with a counselor.
17. Does Monroe have Co-op and internship programs?
A. Cooperative Education is conducted by Monroe College in cooperation with businesses, industries, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. The program integrates on-campus study with off-campus work experience. Employment is usually directly related to the student's academic area. In addition to gaining valuable experience, co-op students also receive 3 academic credits at the end of their internship.
18. Is there an office for International Students?
A. Gersom Lopez is the Director of the Office of International Student Admissions. This office provides assistance and counseling for overseas students on issues ranging from visa applications to employment issues.
19. What is the 24 Credit GED Associate degree program?
A. Monroe has a program for qualified students, 21 and over, to earn a GED and an Associate degree in less than two years. For acceptance, students must pass an exam and meet all necessary requirements from the admissions office.
